Renovating Historic French Barns: Our Three-Year Journey in Lot's Cayssalie

I never saw it coming. Standing behind the gleaming MAC counter at London Selfridges, makeup brush in hand and not a hair out of place, I couldn't have imagined that true joy would find me years later – hair matted with plaster, wearing those hideous Crocs I once mocked, transforming ancient French stone barns with my bare hands in the heart of rural Lot.
The "Up and Down" Barns That Called to Me from the French Countryside

I used to whisper this to myself on drives near our old home, especially passing one particular beauty on the road to Agentat's farmers market. Something about their sturdy presence, half-buried in the earth like sleeping giants, spoke to something deep inside me. So when we first rounded the corner to view this property in the Lot region I spotted not one but TWO "up and down" barns. I felt the universe wink. These weren't just barns – they were manifestations standing there in stone and timber as if they'd been waiting for me all along.

These two structures stand as sentinels at the entrance to our sanctuary, connected by an exterior wall and framed by a grand arch with a black metal gate. They create a perfect circle of protection, with the ancient Lot forest serving as our backdrop. What draws me to these 18th-century structures is how they're anchored into the earth itself. Three Years of Stone Barn Renovation in Rural France
The smaller barn fell into our renovation plans first. Now, three years into this labour of love, I'm finally putting the finishing touches on the larger one – a journey that's tested every ounce of patience and creativity I possess while teaching us everything about French building regulations, local artisan techniques, and sustainable renovation practices.
If my former clients could see me now – the woman who once carefully applied eyeshadow now carefully applying traditional French techniques to centuries-old stone – they wouldn't recognize me. And yet, I've never felt more myself.

Each decision, from repointing the vast gable walls with traditional lime mortar to maintaining an open-plan layout, was made with preservation in mind. We kept walls to an absolute minimum – only the bathroom has full enclosure – to honour the original openness of these magnificent Lot structures.
The all-glass doors were perhaps my favourite architectural choice, allowing guests to enjoy the spectacular Lot Valley view from the dining table without any barriers. There's something about sitting there with your morning coffee, looking out across the French countryside that makes you feel both sheltered and connected to the outdoors at once – exactly what holiday rentals in this region should offer.

While our original plans included walk-in showers for both vacation rental spaces, fate had other ideas. I didn't hesitate. "Go get it."
